Carex appalachica features graceful and striking fine, dark green, 12" long weeping blades, which lie in a in a sweeping mound six inches from the ground.
When planted in masses, the foliage appears to curve and swirl in a stunning look of motion - wind causes the foliage to moves in sweeping motions.
The fine-textured long blades of this
grass
look so soft and inviting, you’ll want to lie down in it.
Its fountaining habit makes it a lovely and outstanding groundcover in dry shady sites, even in the root zone under trees. When used singly or en masse, the textural contrast near bolder elements is simply stunning.
Use Appalachian Sedge for ground cover, mass plantings, naturalizing, soil stabilization, erosion control on slopes, borders, a lawn alternative in dry shade, and woodland areas. This sedge is a great choice for "no-mow" sitautions (although it can be mowed on a high setting).
Excellent for natural habitats (especially under trees), it is a fairly rare native of the Eastern US. Its tidy clumping nature makes it perfectly suited for containers, in rock gardens or stumps, or in a border planting along a walkway.
Appalachian Sedge makes a lovely low-maintenance lawn substitute (will not tolerate foot traffic) as it will grow under many conditions, as long as it is in dry to average soil. It is easy to grow and quite drought tolerant, it will tolerate drying out with regular watering; it will not tolerate consistently wet soil.
Appalachian Sedge prefers some shade, particularly in warmer climates (where it is evergreen). White inflorescences in late spring are followed by seed heads. Mature height 6-8", spread 12-18".

General information about Carex (Sedge): Carex, a splendid Sedge, yields graceful arching foliage that bends and bows, creating a lush, green coverage of color like a fresh coat of paint. Often used as a bold accent, for borders and mass plantings, in containers, or as a groundcover in shade and rock gardens, Carex can also be planted along banks of ponds, incorporated into perennial gardens, grouped together, and utilized as a ground cover along walkways, paths or on sloping banks. Carex is wonderful for erosion control, deer and disease resistant, long-lasting and easy to grow. Low-maintenance, non-invasive, and dense to the point of choking out weeds, Carex spreads by rhizomes (slowly in dry soils and moderately fast in wet soils). An excellent alternative to ivy and Pachysandra, Carex produces small, cream to brown, bottlebrush-like flowers in late spring that are rather insignificant to the plant's ornamental value. Most ornamental sedges grow best in moist or wet soil, however we do offer Pennsylvania Sedge which is an exception to that rule. As a complete lawn substitute, water feature plant, or simply a container at your front entrance, Carex will give a lush, tropical feeling to your garden. Gardener Tips Sedge looks its best when the foliage is cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth occurs. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. In northern zones, it does best when planted out of the way of winter winds and provided with some protection such as snow or straw. You simply cannot go wrong pairing a large garden scape of Coreopsis and Carex. Even in potted plantings, the golden blossoms of Coreopsis are a lovely foil to any Sedge. See all Carex (Sedge) |
