Heuchera micrantha 'Palace Purple', commonly called Coral Bells, will knock your socks off with his leathery mahogany colored foliage that lives up to its royal name because it is certainly king of all the other Heucheras on the market.
Especially sturdy and easily grown, this clump-forming,
evergreen
perennial features a (12 inch tall) mound of ivy-like (3 to 4 inch wide) leaves reminiscent of those you would see on a maple tree.
Mahogany, reddish-purple on top and beet-red underneath, the foliage adds rich color to any garden.
In hot summers, Palace Purple's foliage color may fade to a bronze-green. From late spring to early summer, the dark mound of leaves serve as an elegant backdrop to creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers on slender dark red stems extend (15-25 inches high) mimicking a starlit summer night.
Interesting Fact
Named 1991 Perennial Plant of the Year.

General information about Heuchera (Coral Bells): Hands down, Coral Bells is a true must for just about every garden style. The incredibly thick, luxurious foliage is excellent for edging, rock gardens, and facings to buildings and trees. Its wavy foliage makes it a lovely addition to English-cottage style gardens as a singular plant, yet it is equally in a border setting where it adds depth and structure. In mass, it forms an attractive ground cover, and its presence tends to attract hummingbirds. This species has a slow growth rate and is one of the few groundcovers that can grow under walnut trees. Ideally, plan to give Coral Bells moist, well-drained soil, though she is tolerant of a wide range of soil types. Also, she is moderately tolerant of salt. If you live in northern climates, Coral Bells will tolerate full sun. One reason Coral Bells is actually highly sought after is due to her preference in the hot summers of southern areas, for part shade, particularly in the afternoon. It is rare to find such a show-stopper for a shade garden. Things To Note The genus Heuchera is named after Johann Heinrich von Heucher (1677-1746), an 18th century German physician. Gardener Tips If you desperately want this plant and can only offer it full sun, it will need consistent moisture and the soil should not be allowed to dry out. If you really want to see her perform, cut in generous amounts of organic matter to the soil. |
